A songwriter from Wilmington, NC. Eleven original songs, published 2012 to 2014, before he died at 22.
We believe no one should suffer in silence. Music offers a lifeline of connection and calm in moments of crisis.
Two music-therapist grants funded in 2025. Four more planned for 2026.
Music Heals Minds is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit founded by Hannah Kol (singer/songwriter) and Mary Jones in memory of Mary's son, Cole. Our mission: offer hope, healing, and help to those suffering from mental illness — by placing music therapists, donating instruments, and funding grants across North Carolina and Tennessee.
Music Heals Minds was founded in 2018 in memory of Cole Rassin — a young songwriter and guitarist from Wilmington, North Carolina, and my daughter Hannah’s dear friend. Cole started playing at eight years old, posted his songs on YouTube, and played downtown Wilmington for anyone who would listen. He was 22 when we lost him, in February 2018, after a chronic condition he had carried for two years.
After Cole’s passing, Hannah took six of his unfinished songs to Nashville and finished them — the Sunny Day album, released that September. Hannah Kol (Hannah Laham) and Cole’s mother, Mary Jones, founded Music Heals Minds to place music in the hands of people living with mental illness.
Our work is practical. We put musical instruments, lessons, and songwriting journals into mental health facilities for therapy use. Since 2024, we’ve funded grants placing music therapists in outpatient facilities in North Carolina and Tennessee. Our goal is to help organizations not only start using music therapy, but also learn how to make it sustainable through reimbursement and partnerships — and to expand that work across the country.
A recreation therapist at New Hanover Regional wrote to us last year about a patient relearning to walk, harnessed into equipment, while a therapist strummed a donated guitar to keep her rhythm. “The patient was smiling and trying hard,” she wrote. “Please know how much good your organization is still performing and the lives that are still being touched and changed.”
That’s why we’re still at this. If you’re here, thank you. If you can give — an instrument, a donation, your time — we’d be grateful.
Instruments, therapists, and an annual benefit concert. Hope, healing, and help, put into rooms where they're needed.

From $10,000 grants for music therapy programs to donated guitars — we make healing accessible.

“I was walking down the hallway at the Rehabilitation Hospital. There was a PT assisting a woman who was clearly learning to walk again following some sort of trauma. She could not support her own weight yet and was harnessed into equipment that suspended her. There was another therapist strumming a guitar keeping a steady rhythm for her to follow. The patient was smiling and trying hard. It was one of the guitars that your organization donated. Please know how much good your organization is still performing and the lives that are still being touched and changed. Thank you.”
“I am truly so grateful for what you’ve donated to our SHORE program. The instruments, sheet music, mixers, etc. — know that not only have you supplied us with these goods, you’ve also helped to create a community for our folks at SHORE. Thank you, thank you, thank you!”
“Your gifts have brought light and healing to our group. THANK YOU so very much!”
The album that started it all. Six of Cole's unfinished songs, recorded and released by his friend Hannah Kol in 2018, after Cole died. The event that launched Music Heals Minds was the album's release party.
Franklin Theatre, April 2025. Moved last-minute from Amy Grant's Farm due to tornadic weather in the area. John Oates headlined, with Heidi Parton on the bill. The community showed up anyway.
